Synthesis of ADHTDN

ADHTDN, an acronym for 4-amino-3,5-dihydrazino-1,2,4-triazole dinitramide, is an energetic compound used in propellant compositions. As for its explosive properties I am somewhat unsure. It is used in a variety of rocket fuels, but does not seem to be used as an explosive.

Prepare a mixture of 100 g of triaminoguanidine in 400 mL of ethylene glycol.  Heat the mixture at 123-125 C for 7.5 hours.  Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, and then add an excess of isopropyl alcohol to cause the precipitation of the product.  Wait for 15 minutes, filter to collect the precipitate, wash it with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, and allow it to dry.
